Double Olympic champion Tirunesh Dibaba broke away from the field about three kilometers into the race and pulled away for an easy win at the 2012 Carlsbad 5000. Marathon specialist Worknesh Kidane was second while Pauline Korikwiang was third.

McKaig arrives in Blowing Rock having completed an excellent collegiate career for both Michigan State and Indiana Tech. The Fort Wayne, IN native was 10th at the NCAA XC Championships while at Michigan State and won the NAIA XC Title while at Indiana Tech. McKaig has also run 15:55 for 5,000m on the track, 33:47 for 10,000m at 1:14 for a 1/2 marathon.
