Symmonds, OTC teammates set to go after American best

Bishop Kelly graduate Nick Symmonds and his Oregon Track Club Elite teammates will attempt to break the U.S. indoor record in the distance medley relay at the Husky Invitational on Friday in Seattle, according to the Eugene-based team.

They'll be shooting for the mark of 9 minutes, 25.77 seconds set by the University of Texas in 2008 in Fayetteville, Ark. Symmonds will be joined by Matt Scherer, Tyler Mulder and Will Leer.

Symmonds, a 2008 Olympian was ranked 10th in the world in the 800 last year by Track & Field News with a personal best of 1:43.83.

The distance medley features four distances, beginning with 1,200 meters, then moving to the 400, 800 and 1,600. Symmonds likely will run the 800 or 1,200.
