THE second fastest 100m runner of all-time Carmelita Jeter faces the in-form athlete on the circuit in the shape of Laverne Jones-Ferrette in the 60m at the PSD Bank Meeting in Dusseldorf, February 3. The 30-year-old Jeter won the Glasgow International in Kelvin Hall in 7.19 but Jones-Ferrette bested Jeter’s time by one-tenth at the BW-Bank Meeting in Karlsruhe the following day, where the US Virgin Island athlete set a national record and world-lead of 7.09 in the heats, and a 7.11 clocking in the final.

World indoor champion Angela Williams and Bahamian veteran Chandra Sturrup should not be discounted either.

Olympic 110m hurdles champion Dayron Robles makes his season’s debut in the 60m hurdles and the Cuban star faces a very competitive field in his first race of the 2010 season. Former European indoor champion Gregory Sedoc and Daniel Kiss from Hungary will be among his leading rivals.

Lolo Jones starts as the pre-race favourite in the women’s equivalent, after a world-leading mark of 7.90 in Karlsruhe. Sarah Claxton is also expected to start.

Fresh from a world-leading mark in Karlsruhe, Yuriy Borzakovskiy takes on Olympic silver medallist Ahmed Ismail from Sudan in the 800m while Augustine Choge and Paul Kipsiele Koech start as the pre-race favourites in the 1500m and 5000m respectively.

Two-time world champion Yargelis Savigne starts as the pre-race favourite in the triple jump while Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski headlines the shot put in the infield action.

Helen Clitheroe took victory in the 1500m on this track in 2007 and the UK steeplechase record-holder starts among the pre-race favourites. Still in very good form at the age of 36, the Preston athlete won the 3000m at the Glasgow International with a blistering finish on the last lap and Clitheroe is likely to find that speed will stand her in good stead as she steps down in distance to face Olympic finalist Anna Mishchenko, among others.

World finalist Steve Lewis takes part in the pole vault and the Newham & Essex Beagle will be keen for a good performance after struggling in Glasgow. Lewis will face the very experienced Frenchman Romain Mesnil and a strong home presence including Danny Ecker, Malte Mohr, Alexander Straub and Raphael Holzdeppe.
